Train of Consequences is an emotionally charged, character-driven novel that follows Shelton Cole and his best friend (and brother from another mother), Richie Kemp.
The story is told through a series of flashbacks by the main character, Shelton Cole (or as you will come to know him, Shelly), as he journeys back home to visit his friend, just as he had promised Richie he would all those many years ago.
During their teenage years, life had been anything but kind to them. For Richie, day after day was filled with more and more pain, heartache and uncertainty of what would come of his torn and shattered life. All the while, Shelly struggles to come to terms with the death of his brother, as he witnesses the remnants of his parents' tattered marriage seemingly wither away.
One day, the pain and the hardship spirals out of control and the two boys find themselves leaving it all behind and "running free."
Train of Consequences is a coming of age story about just how influential love, family and friends can be in life. And a story about how every decision and every action has a consequence - some that result in good and some that do not.
Tom Jarvis does an excellent job building his characters and their world. Whatever Shelly and Richie were experiencing, whether it be sadness, laughter, pain, or hope - I experienced it with them.
When I turned the last page and closed the book, I held it to my heart. For an hour I sat in silence and reflected on my own "what ifs," and all the tragedies and joys that have encompassed my life thus far. I thought about how all those actions and reactions have made me who I am today.

Train of Consequences Overview
It is early 1991, and Shelton Cole has just turned thirteen. Barely surviving the aftermath of a car accident that has killed not only his brother but also his parents' marriage, Shelton is thrilled when he becomes instant chums with Richie Kemp, a transplant from New York who has moved to New Hampshire with his mother to escape the stigma of his father's imprisonment. But after Richie's mother marries a man who revels in abusing Richie, the two troubled teenagers decide to embark on a journey that will change their lives forever.

As the two boys begin a life on the run, an old drifter takes them under his wing and introduces Shelton and Richie to an underground society of vagabonds, opening the boys' eyes to a strange new world and unwittingly setting the course to a horrific chain of events that soon spiral out of control.

Seventeen years later, Shelton returns to New Hampshire to fulfill a childhood promise to Richie. As he is flooded with buried memories, Shelton must face the demons of his tragic past before he can move forward.
