Human Cargo: Ghost Trains ReviewThe author has created a masterpiece, Indeed. The story is fresh and his amazing skill in portraying the tragic destruction of human dignity and humanity,denial of human rights, blind patriotism, starvation and the impressive love story through the difficult times has captivated my attention from beginning to last. Breath-taking plots, speedy development of conflicts and his writing style make the history alive. Especially the last scene is stuck in the back of my mind and will stay there for many years to come. It is a tragic history unknown to the west, the first historical novel every published in the west where we take freedom for granted and humger is unknown. Bolshevik Revolution erupted like a dormant volcano out of social injustice, disparity of wealth and corruption. The revolution destroyed freedom and social structure. As the time went on, Russians lost everything they had fought for. Soon they turned on each other. In the absence of freedom they were no better than domesticated pets. The central government controlled with a tight fist, forcing everyone to depend upon it for everything. HUMAN CARGO: Ghost Trains is an unforgettable love story. As I was reading it I felt like watching a big-scale historical movie on a wide screen. The background is the Bolshevik Revolution, the bloodiest civil war in Russian history. Captain Sasha Vasilievich's life was changed when Russian Army eastern front collpased. And then he was swept into the revolution. It was like wild fires spreading over the prairies. He and his wife Irina got separated as the revolution continued. Sash joined the revolution. While waiting for her husband, Irina was raped by the infamous Cossack general Semenov. Irina was badly burned in a fire and decided to vanish from the evil world that had snapped the burgeoning stalk of her hopes and dreams. The civil war went on, millions of innocent civilians died of hunger and diseases. Sasha continued his search for his wife for the past three years. The most memorable is their reunion. When they finally met again Irina refused her husband. "You don't like what you see." Sasha replied, "I haven't come to see a beautiful face. I'm looking for the lost part of my life." While rebuilding their lives, their mother land betrayed them. In 1937 Joseph Stalin began his bloody ethinic cleansing against Soviet minorities. His first victims were Soviet-Koreans. Stalin put them on cattle trains and shipped them out of Russia. Among the deportees were Sasha and irina on the cattle train bound for unknown land of exile. No bath rooms on the trains because they were like cattle. No stoves on the train because they were criminals and their only crime was they looked different. No medicine on the train for they were animals. Diseases took a heavy toll on children and the old. On the way to their unkown destinations, Irina contracted the wide-spreading disease but she survived the deadly disease that claimed tens of thousands of lives. After a moth-long ride, the train unloaded the human cargo in the middle of nowhere. Sasha and his family resolved to survive and to rise again from the unbearable adversities and the crime their country had committed against them and against humanity. Irina, her septmother and her little boy stepped out into the snow-covered steppe to look for weeds, roots and winter desert animals to cook their first meal in the unwelcoming land. in the freezing winter in Ushtobe, a remote part of Kazakhstan, deportees took shelter in dirt dugouts over the vast snowy steppe.
