The Midnight Gate ReviewIf you liked Spellbinder/The Last Ghost, then you'll love this! Wonderful character growth from the previous novel, a realistic treatment of the protagonists because they are "children".I don't want to write any spoilers, but I loved it!
Stringer's world is amazingly well thought out. It is light, but with a shadow of darkness that give it a serious undertone. An example of this is the attitude of the Queen of the Abyss which I had never considered or expected from this kind of story.
I thought that the Empress of the Dark Spaces was a really great curveball. I'm curious as to what more there is about some of the stuff the Queen of the Abyss was talking about. (Like the Chime Children.) I thought it was funny that everyone refused to tell Steve and Belladonna anything, and then was surprised when they didn't know. I also loved Steve's seriousness about his duties as Paladin because he is so flippant about everything else. My one real criticism is a minor inconsistency of Belladonna and Steve. In the first book, Steve was horrible at giving excuses, and Belladonna was great at it. In this one it's reversed. (Except for that time at the monastry.)
Five stars! Another winner.
I hope I wasn't to spoilery. There's stuff in this book I want to rave about specifically, but I won't here, to avoid giving away the big stuff. ...Now, as an American, I have to look into obtaining some Parma Violets. The Midnight Gate Overview
