The Exquisite Corpse Adventure ReviewAs an "episodic story game" it was a good way to promote the www.read.gov site, and no doubt was an interesting project for the authors involved. But, however well intentioned and interesting the exercise was, it did not necessarily lead to the creation of a book that you can encourage people to buy. Here's why.
Years ago, when I was a bachelor on a tight budget, I had a very limited food pantry. One night I decided to make macaroni and cheese, from a box. It was fine, but blah. So, I put in a can of tuna fish, and made tuna casserole. Still blah, so I put in a bottle of cocktail sauce to jazz it up. Something was missing, so I added some olives. It was a little watery, so I put in shredded cheese. Then I put in some corn; then french fried onion pieces; then bacon pieces; then a topping of potato chips. Hours after I had first started I threw it all away, as the inedible mess it was, and had a beer and the last of the chips. Well, this book is that casserole.
In this kind of serial book each author's decisions do one of two things - they either narrow the next author's options, or force the next author to step outside of the plot to open up whole new avenues. Since most authors choose the latter course, the characters and the plot become more and more fantastical. Characters are constantly tearing off disguises to reveal that they are really a character who was previously abandoned or are really an entirely different character, or are really an alien or a talking elephant or a disguised talking elephant, or a sentient egg yolk (you get the idea). Everything becomes more and more frantic. Everything becomes sillier and sillier. No plot line can be developed, because everything zigs and zags from chapter to chapter. Most importantly, no character can be developed, (heck no character is consistent from chapter to chapter), and the story just becomes more and more incoherent, random, and unsatisfying. Ultimately, the reader becomes detached from the whole exercise, and finishing the book just becomes a chore.
Even putting that aside, I thought this would at least provide a good opportunity to compare, side by side as it were, the styles and approaches of a number of very good, very interesting authors. Unfortunately, because of the constraints imposed by the form, the authors' options were so limited that they lost their own voices for the most part and just became overwhelmed by the chaos. As a consequence, this book is also a very unsatisfying introduction to the work of any of the contributors, and may lead you, unfairly, to dismiss some otherwise worthy writers. Some of the illustrations are fun, and the cover is the best part of the book, but that doesn't seem to be enough, to me, to carry the book.
I was surprised to see this was even published for sale as a standalone novel. The book is available, in its entirety, on a chapter by chapter basis, as a podcast, at the read.gov site. At the very least, you can sample it there, at length, before committing to buy it.The Exquisite Corpse Adventure Overview
