News to Me: Adventures of an Accidental Journalist ReviewI suspect this book will be read mostly by journalists and Minnesota residents, since a cursory look at its description will lead potential readers to think that's all the book is about. That's too bad, because you don't need to be interested in either of those subjects in order to enjoy the book - assuming you like good writing, well-told stories, humor, and a compassionate view of the world.
Yes, the author's love of newspapers and Minnesota (especially the city of Duluth) is a large part of this book, but for me her story-telling skill is what really made the book fun to read. Relatively common-place situations and people somehow become interesting when she writes about them, and I was left wanting to learn more about some of the people she writes about. That's not to say everything in the book is common-place - her trip to what was then the USSR was unusual at that time (the mid-1980s), and the combination of that exotic setting and the repressive Soviet government makes for interesting stories.
There is a lot more to this book - the changes in the newspaper business over the last 30 years and the author's growing maturity as a person and a writer, to name two - but for me the well-written stories and the humor are what stand out and are what lead me to recommend this book.News to Me: Adventures of an Accidental Journalist Overview
