McGraw-Hill's Chinese Dictionary and Guide to 20,000 Essential Words: A New Method for Non-Native Speakers to Look Up the 2,000 Most Commonly Used Characters in Chinese ReviewAs a long-time student of Chinese and as a professional Chinese translator I have worn through countless print dictionaries and melted the gears of more than one electronic dictionary. This dictionary is outstanding. Although limited to 2,000 Chinese characters, and having a rather bulky binding, its strengths are obvious as soon as you open it up. The entries are large and easy to read. I can work on my texts and simultaneously keep the dictionary open to the side and still clearly see what I need to see. The example sentences are written with humorous recurring characters (Mr. Shagua, or Mr. Idiot), Chinese cultural quips, and excellent use of the terms under consideration - often using multiple related terms in the same sentence to allow the student to determine which is most appropriate. Most, if not all, entries include a list of related terms and phrases. This is especially useful given the fact that many Chinese characters may appear in the middle or at the end of words. Previously, the only dictionaries capable of looking up characters at the ends of words were reverse dictionaries - and no dictionaries, aside from those online, are capable of looking up the occurrence of characters in the middle of words/phrases. The dictionary's revolutionary character look-up system will be incredibly useful for students learning Chinese for the first time, or just casual users. One of the great drawbacks to other dictionaries is that a student had to master the often bewildering stroke order system of Chinese characters in order to use the dictionary. This new system does away with that altogether and anyone interested in looking up a Chinese character can do so with ease with just a few steps. The dictionary's multiple useful indices include the original-style radical charts, long-form/traditional character charts, and a nice English to Chinese index. Overall a great dictionary.McGraw-Hill's Chinese Dictionary and Guide to 20,000 Essential Words: A New Method for Non-Native Speakers to Look Up the 2,000 Most Commonly Used Characters in Chinese Overview
