Fire Angels: A Southern Novel ReviewFire Angels, by Joseph Richardson, is a thought-provoking and well-paced depiction of life in a small Florida town in the 1920s during and immediately after World War I. The setting is vividly and lovingly described, and as a native Floridian myself, I can not only clearly visualize David and Sara Cooper's small hardscrabble farm, the town of Walako, and all the details of everyday life as it was lived then, but I can smell the odors of Mr. Strow's feed store, hear the rattle of David's old Model T truck, and feel the dust of the fields in my nostrils. Although I was not born until the 1940s, a couple of decades after the time of this novel, I can also well remember the ugly racial tensions that continued to exist in the South throughout my childhood and beyond--leading to a collective Southern guilt that so many Southern writers over the last century have dealt with and are still trying to come to terms with in their fiction. The characters--both good and bad--come alive on the page, and as the racial and ethnic conflicts escalate into more and more violent consequences, I can see them coming but am powerless to stop them. The villain of the book, Sid Guthrie, is truly a slimy, hateful man, and the more I saw of him the more I found myself rooting for him to be found out and exposed for what he truly is. Without giving away any of the plot details, I can say that after all the tragedy brought about by one man's hatred and scheming, the ending satisfies, and as I finished the book, I felt like standing and cheering for justice, albeit too late for some of the most admirable characters in the novel. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading about the real South, getting beyond the moonlight and magnolias and seeing some ugly truths about how far the ripples of prejudice may extend.
