Memoir of a Gulag Actress ReviewMost people who know about the Soviet system of Gulags, the horrific chain of prison camps across Russia and Siberia where political prisoners were tormented for decades. Many of us have read Solzhenitzyn'sThe Gulag Archipelago as well as One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich which is a more personalized, and tremendously chilling account of the life of a "zek" or political prisoner. Now we get a chance to read the extraordinary tale of Tamara Petkevich, who was an actress in the gulag system and experienced its Matrix-like horrors for decades. This book reminds me of Coming Out of the Ice: An Unexpected Life by Victor Herman, a Detroit born man whose father, a staunch Communist, moved his family to Soviet Russia and caused Herman to spend years of horrible torment in a gulag when he was scooped up in the Stalinist purges. But the torment Petkevich writes about is more psychological; she downplays the physical evil and horrific events to some extent. What is similar in this memoir is that Petkevich's father was also a staunch Communist but nonetheless was purged. As the Chinese proverb says "When the city burns, jade and pebbles burn alike."
Later, Petkevich marries an exiled man for love, not common sense, and her story continues with drastic ramifications.
I won't go into the incredible experiences that the author relates to us, for example, when she worked as a camp nurse, but I can tell you that this is an incredibly readable book, filled with chilling and astonishing information about the gulags from a woman's point of view and that if you are a student of recent history (last 100 years) you will absolutely want to read this book. I can't think of another written by a woman Having read Herman and Solzhenitsyn, I was glad to add this to my reading list of Soviet Russian memoir. You should read it.Memoir of a Gulag Actress Overview
